Roter Lotus Medical Care: Report from 7th September 2011
On Wednesday, 7th, September Roter Lotus Medical Care arranged a medical camp in an orphanage in Emlia, Block Cholapur, Varanasi. Emilia is approximately 6.7 km west from the medical centre in Sarnath. This camp itself took place in S.D Memorial School and boys orphanage, and all children received medical attention. Most of the children here were homeless and ended up being put in the orphanage here. People from the local village also attended the camp and received medical care and medicine where necessary. The population in this village is 3800 and poverty levels are very high. Most of the people who live here are poor famers and laborers.
The doctors and staff of Roter Lotus Medical team and the D-Foundation NGO were present. The team included Mr. Hari Om Rai, Chairperson, Dr. S.K.Tiwari, Dr. S.K.Pandey, Dr. Anurag Yadav, Dr. Ashok Verma, and our pharmacist Mr. Anurag Srivastava. Other members working on the day were project coordinator, Mr. Mridul Kumar Dwivedi and staff members Mr. Ankit Srivastava , Mr. Rakesh, and Mr. Gandhi. The team worked hard for the day, providing medical attention to all the patients and dispensing free medicine. Health awareness information and advice was also given to the patients on the day.
The doctors examined men, woman and children as they arrived. As we have seen in other camps, there are large numbers of women arriving and most have numerous diseases or illnesses.
Problems such as menopausal syndrome, high/low blood pressure, anemia, skin problems, eyes disorders and fungal infections are common amongst women. The most common medical issues amongst the men were skin diseases, severe headaches, back and joints pain. In the boys the doctors noted common problems such as malnutrition, skin problems, dysentery, diarrhea and stomach worms. Most patients that were seen to were also malnourished. Medication was prescribed and distributed to the local people and their parents. The medicine for the boys in the orphanage was passed to the orphanage staff who will in turn provide it to the boys.
Overall the day went well and many patients were seen to. The patients were given advice regarding hygiene; to clean their bodies, hands and nails regularly. We also gave all the boys vitamins and minerals to help maintain a healthy diet. The doctor also recommended that iron, calcium and stomach worm medication be distributed to all children. The staffs were also advised on how best to keep the boys in good health and hygiene. We will follow up the situation with monthly checks on the children to ensure the situations improve.
Thank you
