Introduction
The symbol of the organisation is the lotus flower, the symbol of wisdom in buddhist teachings. It symbolises the Buddhism nature and the true essence of things, which are undisturbed by the ignorance and illusion of the world.
Our medical operation is in co-operation with the D-Foundation NGO in Sarnath who are helping to
establish the operations on the ground.
Who are Roter Lotus?
Roter Lotus is a non-profit organisation set up to provide free medical care, medicine and training to the poorest people in India. Through the support of the founders and donations our aim is to continue our current operations of medical care and support and expand in order to help as many people as possible.
Founders Dr. Hedda and Dr. Claus Blumenroth worked as gynaecologists in Germany for many years
until 2005. While on a visit to India in 2000 they had seen the problems faced by so many people and
decided to use their knowledge and experience to help. Therefore they brought more than 5000 pieces of equipment, instruments and clinic-clothes from their one-day-surgery-clinic and practice in Germany to North-India, which will be used in the future for the planned hospital in Sarnath.

Roter Lotus wants to express its thanks to the Gyuto Monastery in Sidhbari / Dharamsala for storing
the medical equipment at their place.
Through their support and through fundraising, the Roter Lotus Medical Centre has been established in Sarnath where the poorest people can come and receive free medical care and medicine.
Current Activities
The Roter Lotus Medical Centre opened in 2011 offering free health care and medicine. The medical team including volunteers visit the local slums and impoverished areas to assess those in poor health.
Out-Patients Department - The people most in need of medical attention are informed about the out-
patients health centre and advised to visit there as soon as possible. At the medical centre we have
general physicians, paediatric care, homeopathic doctors, a gynecologist and an eye specialist. We
also have medical stock available and try to provide the necessary medicines immediately.
Ambulance services - a fully equiped ambulance has also been purchased and provides treatment to
those people who are not well enough to travel to the medical centre. Treatment can be given to them in their home or they can be transported to the Roter Lotus centre or another hospital where necessary.
Health camps - another important activity of Roter Lotus Medical Care are the health camps. While visiting the different slums and impoverished regions, we were able to assess those areas which are in particularly desperate conditions. We then arrange a one or two day medical camp and inform the local people. Many of the people here, particularly women and the elderly cannot leave their homes due health or social reasons. Our camps allow us to provide badly medical needed care to all these people. Our team arrives in the morning with the ambulance and our mobile clinic van and huge crowds visit the camps. We are able to provide the necessary medicines on the day.
Training camps - education and training are also vital in order to prevent these problems reoccuring. We arrange training camps where local people (particularly women) come and receive training in
health and hygiene amongst others. This will help to improve conditions in their areas and help to stop the spread of infection and disease.
Location of Roter Lotus Medical Care
Roter Lotus Medical Care is located in Sarnath; 6km from the city of Varanasi in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The state has the highest population in all of India and there are many slums and extremely poor rural areas. Sarnath itself is an area of great poverty and many struggle to survive here. Keeping food on the table is the main priority and when one of the family has a medical emergency, they simply don’t have the money to pay for treatment and medicine. This is where the Roter Lotus Medical Care try to help.

It is also worth noting that Sarnath is a place of great beauty and has huge significance to Buddhism. It was here that Buddha gave his first teachings after enlightment. Many monasteries and temples have been established here but the situation of the local people is extremely poor.
Future Aims
Our current aim and future aim is to help as many of the poorest people as we possibly can. At present our medical centre and activities help thousands of people in this area. However we are limited to prescribing medicines, smaller treatments and giving advice.
Our future aim is to establish a fully functional hospital where we can provide full medical treatment
including the necessary operations. The hospital will be free for both treatment and medicines and we will guide these poeple through their options to ensure they get the best medical treatment.
We would also like to increase our training programs to educate people on traditional medicines. In
the past there were many herbal doctors who were able to treat many of the simpler disorders. If we
can train these people to use the plants and herbs naturally available to them, this will prevent many
illnesses from arising.
500, 000 children below 5 years of age die every year in India
There were 40, 000 cases of suicide in India in 2010
Donations & Support
In short; the more support we receive, the more people we can help.
All types of support are welcome and the more contributions we receive the more medical camps and activities we can arrange. To run these projects is expensive and the cost of the medicine for one camp can be over one thousand euro.
Support can be through financial donations which are vitally important. Also the donation of medicines and equipment is extremely welcome. Furthermore we welcome volunteers who wish to work on the projects with us.
Also everybody, who is interested in the work of Roter Lotus and Dfoundation in Sarnath, is
heartly welcome.
