Release of Ruksana

On the same date as International Women’s Day in India, a young woman named Ruksana was released from the Jaitpura Detention Centre, Varanasi. Ruksana had been living there for seven years and was delighted to finally get released. She is 32 years old and has a seven year old daughter. D-Foundation have taken responsibility for the welfare of Ruksana and will help her to adjust back into life outside of the detention centre. Ruksana did not want to marry or to stay in the home, so the D-Foundation committed to helping her. Ruksana requested to leave the home several times over the past three years but due to financial reasons we were not able to help her. We have now committed to helping and we will need to find support to help her rehabilitation.

Tragedy first stuck Ruksana as a young child when her mother passed away. After her mother’s death. Ruksana lived with her father in Bihar. She was married at the young age of fifteen to a man in Kolkata. The marriage was not a happy one and her husband divorced her. She attempted to find her way back to her fathers house but was unable to do so. She was caught by police and sent to women’s detention centre in Lucknow. A relative got news of the detention and arranged for her release. Then she lived with her grandmother for a short time until she was again remarried. In Indian culture, a woman should not live with relatives, it is socially expected that she should have a husband and live in his home. Unfortunately there were also problems in this marriage as her husband suffered from drug addiction and treated her badly. Eventually she left her husband home with her 1 month old daughter and went to the home of her aunt. However her aunt did not allow her to stay there because she could not afford to feed her and the social fear regarding women living in a home without a husband. Police found her on the streets and sent her to Jaitpura Detention Centre where she spent the next seven years. Her daughter was sent to another centre for children.

During her time at the centre she has completed a sewing course arranged by the D-Foundation under our vocational training courses. We have also trained her in bag making and embroidering along with skills with reading and writing. We will now employ Ruksana and care for her needs. She will work in Academy and help with teaching the students and providing vocational training.

For the continued support for Ruksana we must now find a sponsor. Please help this brave woman now and allow her to build a life for herself. Please contact the D-Foundation if you can help.

Thank you so much for your kind support up to know. The support we receive allows us to help more and more people in desperate situations.

Thank you
