Dfoundation Academy

The D-Foundation Academy is located in the village of Chauki, Azamgarh which is approximately 70 km from Varanasi. The school was established in 2007 to meet the needs of the local community. The area is an agricultural area where most of the land is owned by landlords. Many of those who live in this rural setting are extremely poor and cannot afford to pay school fees.

We are working with the local people and educating them on the advantages of sending their children to school. Education is vital in order to break the cycle of poverty here and the Academy will give the poorest children in the area the chance to study. The school is not reserved only for the poor however and middle class children also attend. Social integration is important and all are welcome to attend here.

Works undertaken to date

The potential for this institute is extremely good and the Academy has made a solid start in 2008/2009; its first full school year. The building itself is fully complete and caters for children from the surrounding areas and villages. The Academy registered over 200 children in the 2009/10 school year and this figure will grow significantly next year. There are seven teachers including the principal employed in the school. The school educates children from Kindergarten to Class 9 via the 7 classrooms provided. There is also one computer room with two working computers. Through previous projects, D-Foundation director Hari Om Rai has a over a decade of experience in providing local children with a high standard of education. The aim of this school is to provide a western level of education to children here from kindergarden to school completion (Class 12). The school is a long term project with a fine building and solid structure in place and the future should be brighter for the young people of this area.

Immediate Projects requirements

There is an immediate need to find a sponsor/sponsors who can be relied on for monthly wages of the teachers and other ongoing costs. We have kept the costs to a minimum in this school and the only real expense is to the teachers. The upkeep and maintenance has be arranged on a voluntary basis. Expansion is also needed with space already in short supply and larger numbers expected for the coming years. There is adequate room for expansion once the funds are sourced. One of the current classroom buildings is a one storey structure and this can easily be converted to a two storey building. This would provide an extra three classrooms and would solve the current space issue.

For people interested in sponsoring the D-Foundation Academy there are several options available.

A sponsor giving only a small monthly amount will get incredible results. For €20 per month, a child can be given full sponsorship in the Academy. This would include schooling 6 days per week, daily food and training in computers.

Alternatively if an individual or group is interested in sponsoring the entire school activities this is also possible. A sponsor could fund the running of the school for €281 per month. As mentioned above we would like to increase this budget eventually to provide more teachers and food provisions. However our immediate requirement is to fund the current activities.

Other options include a one off donation and donations of any size are welcome. Again great work can be done with relatively small amounts here with €3000 sufficient to build three new classrooms and €666 enough to provide furniture for all three classrooms.
